Carrot sticks can develop browned edges and tender centers in the air fryer, but they stay softer than potato fries. The important details are an even cut and enough basket space for hot air to circulate.

Serves: 4 as a side | Prep: 10 minutes | Cook: 14-18 minutes per batch, plus preheating | Total: about 30 minutes for one batch; allow longer for a small basket

    Ingredients and setup

    • 1 pound carrots, scrubbed or peeled and trimmed
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • Optional: 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon chopped parsley to finish

    Method

    1. Cut the carrots into sticks about 3 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. Split unusually thick sections again so the pieces cook at a similar pace. Pat dry before seasoning.
    2. Set the air fryer to 380°F (about 193°C), following the manufacturer’s preheating instructions. Toss the carrots with the oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
    3. Spread the carrots in a loose, mostly single layer. Cook in batches if needed; a deep pile will steam and cook unevenly. Keep unused seasoned carrots aside until their batch is ready.
    4. Air fry for 14-18 minutes, shaking or turning at about 7 minutes. Begin checking a few minutes early. The thickest pieces should yield to a fork and have browned edges; continue in 2-minute increments if they are still hard.
    5. Transfer to a bowl and add lemon juice and parsley, if using. Serve promptly for the best edge texture.

    If the result needs adjusting

Brown outside, hard inside: Reduce the setting to 350°F and continue briefly, checking often. Next time cut the thick sections smaller. Soft but pale: Try less food per batch and dry the carrots more thoroughly. More time alone may soften them further without giving the edges the result you want.

Avoid adding honey or another sugary glaze at the start; it can darken before the carrots soften. If you want a sweet finish, toss the cooked carrots with 1 teaspoon honey after they leave the basket.

Storage: Refrigerate in shallow containers within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or below; use within 3-4 days and reheat to 165°F. USDA food-safety guidance.

Help another cook: If you try this, share your air-fryer capacity, whether the pound of carrots fit in one batch, and the time that gave you a tender center. A photo of the cut size would be especially useful.
